Frequently asked questions
Absolutely! Sanctuary Runners was specifically created to welcome people who have recently arrived in Ireland, whether you’re seeking international protection, have refugee status, or are here through other programs. You don’t need to be an experienced runner, and you’re welcome whatever your fitness level.

Direct Provision is the reception system that we have in Ireland to provide accommodation for people who arrive in Ireland to seek international protection. Our groups acknowledge the extra barriers faced by people living in Direct Provision in attending their local runs. We aim to bring people together to help break down isolation and support integration and wellbeing.
Absolutely! Volunteering is as valuable as running in our community. In fact, many of our most dedicated participants don’t run at all, they come each week to cheer, support, and help create the welcoming atmosphere that makes our groups special. Sanctuary Runners is built on the principle that everyone can contribute in their own way. While many of our members enjoy running, we rely heavily on volunteers who help with everything from welcoming new members and providing encouragement to managing group logistics.
Running (and walking) provides a unique pathway to community integration because it’s accessible, inclusive, and naturally creates regular social connections. For people who are new to Ireland, running offers opportunities to:
- Build confidence when interacting with people from different backgrounds
- Practice English in casual, non-pressured settings
- Establish weekly routines that can help with resettlement
- Meet local people who share interests
Membership of the Sanctuary Runners is free, all members get our blue running top free of charge and are not asked to fundraise. Sanctuary Runners entering formal races (e.g. Cork City Marathon, Great Limerick Run, Longford Marathon etc.) pay the regular entry fee.
While the Sanctuary Runners is a registered charity (RCN 20206637) we don’t ask our members to fundraise. However, we understand that many people want to support our work beyond participating in running groups and we very much welcome donations. If you’re interested in fundraising for Sanctuary Runners, we have ideas and suggestions to help you get started. You can explore various fundraising approaches on our dedicated fundraising page.
Yes we do! You can read it here.
