Who we are

Sanctuary Runners was launched in Cork in 2018 with a simple idea: running and walking together builds friendship. In our first year, 200 runners from 40 nationalities took part in the Cork City Marathon—including people from Direct Provision centres.

Community, connection and momentum

Today, we have 40+ groups across Ireland and a growing international presence. Our Global Solidarity Run reached nearly 100 countries, and in 2024 we fielded the largest-ever marathon team of people seeking international protection at the Dublin Marathon. Thousands now join our weekly runs, walks, and special events—united by our iconic blue t-shirt.

Participation is always free and open to everyone. We provide transport, gear, and a warm welcome, supported by hundreds of volunteers and partners in sports and community organisations. In 2026, Sanctuary Runners continues to grow—bringing communities together through physical activity, friendship and fun, in Ireland and beyond.
