President Michael D Higgins sent a message of support to all those organising, and taking part in, this weekend’s Permanent TSB Sanctuary Run taking place at the Cross Country track on the Sport Ireland Campus in Dublin.
Supported by the Olympic Federation of Ireland and Athletics Ireland the 5km event, which is being attended by Olympians, locals, people seeking international protection and also Ukrainian people in Ireland, is expected to attract a crowd of 1,000 participants.
In a letter sent to the Sanctuary Runners ahead of Sunday’s event President Higgins said:
“May I express my deep gratitude for all that Sanctuary Runners have done in creating a more inclusive and compassionate Ireland. Your celebration of diversity and interculturalism and your commitment to fostering unity, solidarity and respect highlight the power of shared experiences and the strength of our bonds. Your efforts inspire us all, reminding us that together we can achieve great things. May I wish you all a successful, uplifting and memorable event.”
President Higgins, who hosted a number of Sanctuary Runners and their children at Áras an Uachtaráin last Christmas and has always been a supporter and friend of the solidarity-through-sport initiative, added: “In a world where divisions can sometimes overshadow our common humanity, your organisation is breaking down barriers, nurturing the essence of inclusivity and understanding, through the simple act of running.”
