Launch of the ‘Drive for 1,000’ Sanctuary Runners in the Cork City Marathon and the ‘Open Your Doors’ campaign

On Tuesday, Feb 18th the Sanctuary Runners launched our ‘Drive for 1,000’ runners in this year’s Cork City Marathon and our ‘Open Your Doors’ campaign where we’re asking the good people of Cork City and County to put up a Sanctuary Runner on the night before the race.

When Sibusisiwe “Busie” Mhlophe arrived in Ireland from Zimbabwe, she felt isolated and anxious. h “I didn’t know anyone or have family anywhere in Europe. It was so depressing staying in the room the whole day with nothing to do,” she said.

Each morning Sibusisiwe Mhlophe checks the notice board in the Kinsale Road direct provision centre where she’s living. She tries her best to hide her disappointment when once again her name does not appear on the list of postal deliveries for residents.

Crossing the finishing line of the Cork City Marathon will signal a sweet victory for Sanctuary Runners, with Irish people running alongside those in direct provision, writes Noel Baker.
